The Ondo State House of Assembly on Friday impeached its speaker, Bamidele Oleyelogun, and his deputy, Iroju Ogundeji.

Eighteen out of 26 members of the assembly carried out the impeachment.

The impeachment motion was moved by Sunday Olajide (APC-Akure Constituency 2) and seconded by Assemblyman Oluyede Feyide (APC- Ose Constituency).

The two principal officers were immediately replaced by Mr Olamide George and Mr Abimbola Fajolu as speaker and deputy respectively.

Olamide, a former majority leader of the house represents Akure North Constituency, while the new deputy speaker, Abimbola represents Ileoluji/Okeigbo constituency.

The changes were effected in a rowdy plenary session where Jumoke Akindele, a former speaker was picked as the acting speaker, prior to the emergence of the new leadership.

In his inaugural speech, the new speaker said that the impeachment of the two leaders was aimed at correcting certain lapses in the House, and not at witch-hunting anyone.

Armed policemen were stationed around the premises of the assembly to forestall any breakdown of law and order.
