Some members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) clashed with operatives of police Swift Response Squad (SRS) in the New Garage area of Ibadan, Oyo State capital on Thursday.

The incident resulted in the alleged destruction of a police van by the corps members.

Explaining how the fracas began, an eyewitness quoted by The Nation said a corps member, who was returning from the weekly community development service (CDS) meeting in his white Toyota Camry car, was asked to stop by the police.

The source, whose name was not disclosed, said the corps member refused to stop.

“He appeared drunk, and the police went after him after he didn’t stop. He then hit a tricycle,” said the eyewitness.

Despite the collision, the corps member allegedly refused to open his car for the police to inspect. The eyewitness claimed the police broke the car’s windscreen.

Other corps members also returning from CDS meeting in Oluyole Local Government Area reportedly stormed the scene to help their colleague.

It was gathered that the commissioner of police in Oyo State Ngozi Onadeko deployed more policemen to the scene to restore order.

Chairman of Oluyole Local Government Area Settle Olaide also intervened to avoid escalation.
