NYSC member dies in Sokoto camp

A member of National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Ihe Fortune-Ihieche, has died at the Sokoto orientation camp in Wamakko local government area.

The deceased was a native of Imo State and a graduate of Economics from Gregory University in Imo.

NYSC Sokoto State coordinator, Philip Enaberue, told newsmen on Tuesday that Fortune-Ihieche, who was popularly called ‘biggie’ by his peers in camp, died at 11:30 p.m on Sunday while being taken to Usman Danfodio Teaching Hospital, Sokoto.

Mr Enaberue, however, denied reports that the corps member died due to negligence at the camp’s clinic.

“It is normal procedure that camp clinic should be manned by doctors and consultants to attend to a patient reported ill before referral when the need arises.

“We have two stationed ambulances with all required gadgets at the camp for emergencies,” Enaberue said.

The late corps member had, according to Enaberue, applied and gotten approval for redeployment to Cross River but died the day he was to collect the redeployment letter.

Enaberue said the NYSC National Secretariat had set up an independent committee to investigate the incident.
