Nigerian filmmaker, Ibra Ake, wins Grammy for This is America

Nigerian-American filmmaker, Ibra Ake, on Sunday won a Grammy in the ‘Best Music Video’ category for helming the visuals of Childish Gambino’s hit single, ‘This is America.’

The Los Angeles-based creative director celebrated the victory in a tweet on Monday.

“i can’t believe i just won a grammy. ‘where is the catch?!’ royalty forever. 💙💙💙💙💙💙  @famlikefamily @CHADMTAYLOR @MuraiHiro @SherrieSilver @sza @ludwiggoransson @donaldglover,” he wrote.

Childish Gambino’s ‘This is America’ won a total of four awards on the night.

Aside its ‘Best Music Video’ trophy,” it won the ‘Best Rap/Sung Performance’, the ‘Song of The Year’ and the ‘Record of the Year’.

Ibra Ake, who grew up in Nigeria and New Jersey, has constantly credited his Nigerian upbringing for allowing him to understand the value of documentation and storytelling.

Ake, who has spent most of his life in America, is also a writer for hit TV show, ‘Atlanta’ which stars Donald Glover otherwise known as Childish Gambino

Afrobeat star, Seun Kuti, lost in the ‘Best World Music Album’ category after being nominated for his album, Black Times.

He lost out to Soweto Gospel Choir, who earned the award for their Mandela tribute album, Freedom.
