The Nigerian Guild of Editors on Friday ratified Malam Garba Deen Muhammad as its President at the All Nigerian Editors Conference (ANEC) in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State.

Muhammad takes over from the former President, Mr Femi Adesina, now Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to President Muhammadu Buhari.

The guild also ratified former Editor of The Punch, Mr Steve Ayorinde, as Deputy President while Managing Director of New Telegraph, Mrs Funke Egbemode, emerged as the Vice President (West).

Muhammad said in an acceptance speech that he would work hard to uplift the guild.

“I will do everything within my power to ensure that you never regret the decision you have taken today. I promise to be accessible to all members at all times,” he said.

He promised to work with the Nigeria Union of Journalists and other related bodies in order to take journalism to greater heights.

He commended members of the Guild for giving him the chance to serve as President, stressing that the process was done peacefully.

On his predecessor, Muhammad said “Adesina is a gentleman with great leadership qualities.”

The new President will serve until April 2017 when another election will take place.
