Boxing coach Endurance Aberegidi has blamed the medical personnel for the death of boxer Chukwuemeka Igboanugo at the ongoing National Sports Festival.

Igboanugo was knocked out by Anambra’s Prince Gaby Amagor in the 86kg category on Monday.

Igboanugo, who was representing Imo State, reportedly passed out and was taken out of the ring for treatment. He was confirmed dead at a hospital.

Aberegidi, who is based in Borno and was at the venue when the boxer was knocked down, told PUNCH that the medics were demanding for the boxer’s coach instead of treating his case as an emergency.

“They were looking for the coach for over 20 minutes as the boy was not responding to treatment. I don’t know why they wasted so much time to treat the boy. They should have focused on treating him. They said the boy didn’t allow anyone to treat him and after a short while, they came back and said he had given up the ghost.”

The 21st National Sports Festival is being held in Delta State.
