Mary Njoku accuses prominent Nollywood producer of sexual harassment

Nollywood actress, Mary Njoku, has accused an unnamed male movie producer of sexually harassing a female producer.

According to her, the victim wore a pair of leggings that barely covered her crotch.

In an error-ridden Instagram on Thursday, the Stranger In My Bed actress said she witnessed what she described as verbal and sexual abuse.

“What is the Nigerian definition of sexual harassment?” she asked.

“I was standing with a female producer who was wearing leggings with a camel toe and a Very prominent male producer Walked past and said I dey see your Virgina (in pidgin) if I hol am en, I go F…. am tire. On the streets of Lagos! I was deeply offended.”

Married to the co-founder and CEO of iROKOtv, Jason Njoku, Mary is not the first actress to speak about sexual harassment in an industry notorious for all manner of abuse.

Veteran Nigerian actress, Joke Silva, in an exclusive interview with Qed.ng on March 25, 2018, said there are a lot of horrific casting couch stories in Nollywood too and the pressure on young actresses to offer sexual favours is very high.

“Unfortunately, the casting couch is alive in Nollywood,” she said.

“Sometimes there is this hunger to get the work. Maybe you’ve gone to several auditions and you haven’t gotten the work, then somebody tells you that it is because you are not doing what you should do that is when you are not getting the work.

“What I say to them is don’t believe it.”

With three decades in a career that crisscrosses theatre, film, TV and radio, Aunty Joke, as she is fondly called, has seen many careers crash shortly after the exchange of body fluids.

“By the time the producer, director, production manager or whoever insists on sleeping with you, it is very likely you will end up not getting the work.

“Some of the sad stories we hear is that because some people are so desperate, they end up getting passed around,” she added.
