Manchester United faithful were left with red faces after Chris Smalling signed a new deal that will keep him at the club till June 2022.
“This is my ninth season and I am delighted to be continuing my progression with this team,” he said.
“We’re all now concentrating on the busy period.”

Some fans didn’t share in their joy, though, lashing out at the England defender on Twitter.
Nothing against Chris Smalling. He’s obviously a lovely fella. But when he’s the best defender at Manchester United it’s a disgrace. How the club’s standards have fallen. Club is beyond a joke at the minute.

Chris Smalling signing a new contract until 2022. He’s the best defender United have currently and the most consistent defensive player, sadly.
I like Chris, he just does his job. He won’t win you titles, but not going to complain about him extending. Useful bench player.
