Rio Ferdinand receives chieftaincy in Kenya after Nigeria

Manchester United legend, Rio Ferdinand, Saturday, stormed Kenya as part of an event organized by Guinness.

The former England defender visited Nigeria in November, almost a decade after being bestowed with a traditional title in Lagos.

That norm continued in Kenya.

As soon as Ferdinand touched down the country’s capital, Nairobi, he was decorated with a local attire, similar to a traditional honour.

The 40-year-old seemed excited to return to the African soil, rushing off to Twitter to announce his arrival.

Ferdinand, who is in the country for a two-day tour, spoke about Manchester United’s clash with Liverpool on Sunday.

“Manchester United’s performance is very disappointing and especially as a former player we feel it more but during such times, we always looked to big matches,” he said.

“Ahead of any big match, you forget about your form or position on the table and winning at Anfield will be a big morale booster. I hope they go there and get the three points as this will help them get themselves back on track.”

The former United defender is in the country for two days courtesy of Guinness. He will meet local football teams at a training camp in Ruaraka today and later meet fans at Uhuru Gardens.

Ferdinand, who spoke on a number of issues, also praised Kenya for making it to next year’s Africa Cup of Nations finals and said it is a great opportunity for Kenyan players to be spotted and scouted.

“Kenya has great talent when you consider that Victor Wanyama plays in England. It is also exciting that they have qualified for the Nations Cup after such a long time. This is a great opportunity for local players to be spotted and signed by European clubs.”
