Manchester attack: Chelsea cancels Premier League victory parade

Chelsea have cancelled their Premier League victory parade planned for Sunday following Monday’s terror attack in Manchester.

In a statement issued on its official website on Wednesday, the London club said offered their heartfelt condolences to those affected by the tragedy, saying “Our thoughts go out to all the victims, and their families and friends.”

The club had planned an open-top bus parade with the Premier League trophy and hoped to add the FA Cup in Saturday’s final with Arsenal.

Such plans have become “inappropriate” after 22 people were killed in the attack at the Manchester Arena where US pop star, Ariana Grande, played a concert.

“Given the heightened security threat announced by the Government, and recognising that this is a developing situation, we have given this careful consideration,” the club wrote.

“We strongly believe, in the interests of everyone, this is the correct course of action. We are sure our fans will understand this decision.

“Having consulted with the Metropolitan Police, Hammersmith & Fulham Council and other authorities, we know the emergency services would have been as professional as ever, but we would not want in any way to divert important resources by holding an additional, non-ticketed event on the streets of London.

“Furthermore, as a mark of respect, our players will wear black armbands at the FA Cup Final against Arsenal on Saturday. Chelsea Football Club will also make a donation to a fund supporting the victims of this horrific attack.”

Arsenal chief executive Ivan Gazidis said the safety of supporters and staff was paramount and the club had been in close contact with the security services.

“After taking their advice we have reluctantly taken the decision to cancel the screening and potential parade,” he said.

A minute’s silence will be observed before the Europa League final between Manchester United and Ajax in Stockholm on Wednesday and both teams will wear black armbands.

The opening ceremony will also be considerably reduced as a mark of respect for the victims.
