A yet-to-be-identified man was said to have cut off his brother’s hand when the two of them engaged in a fight on Christmas day at Otatubu, Nembe local government area of Bayelsa State.

The man was said to have rushed to his house, picked up a machete with which he tried to cut his brother on the head, but the victim reportedly defended himself with his hand.

It was gathered that the victim was the first to attempt to stab his brother with a knife, but failed.

The siblings were said to have had a misunderstanding, which resulted in the fight, and reportedly turned down all entreaties by elders in the community to settle their differences.

A source, who did not want his name mentioned, said on Thursday that the victim was rushed to a hospital where he is still receiving treatment.

Bayelsa police spokesperson Asinim Butswat confirmed the incident, adding that the suspect had been arrested and was in police custody.

He said the police commissioner Aminu Saleh had directed that the case be transferred to the state Criminal Investigation Department for thorough investigation.

“The Commissioner of Police, Bayelsa State, Mr Aminu Saleh, has directed that the case be transferred to the state CID for diligent investigation. The suspect is in custody,” Mr Butswat stated.
