Airport authorities have arrested a man said to be in his twenties for attempting to gain entry on Friday into an Air Peace aircraft through the wheel-well.

The Owerri-bound aircraft was already taxing for take-off at the Murtala Muhammed Airport local wing in Lagos when the unidentified man sprang out from the bush to gain access to the plane.

“This morning, at exactly 9:10 at the MMA1 Lagos, an Owerri-bound Air Peace aircraft (flight P47252) was taxing towards the threshold for take-off, when a man, in his twenties, emerged from the bush along the runway and tried to gain access to the aircraft through the wheel-well,” Air Peace spokesman, Stanley Olisa, said in a statement.

Mr Olisa said there was a private jet behind the aircraft and that the pilot in command of the private jet informed the Air Peace pilot of the incident.

The spokesman added that the security wing of the Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) was alerted and that the man was accosted and whisked away.

The suspect, who is currently in the custody of FAAN, was said to have told the regulator that he thought the plane was headed overseas.

Air Peace commended FAAN for its timely intervention, adding that the regulator is already investigating the incident.
