Mama Taraba resigns as minister, quits APC

Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development, Aisha Alhassan, popularly known as Mama Taraba, has resigned from President Muhammadu Buhari’s cabinet and from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

In a September 29 letter to the president, Alhassan blamed her resignation on her disqualification from the Taraba APC governorship primary.

She said she was axed without any genuine reason and that the action constituted a grave injustice against her since she paid to purchase the nomination form and had been a loyal member of the party since 2014.

“If I am not good enough to contest elections in the APC, then I feel I am not also qualified to remain a minister in the APC government,” she stated.

She thanked the president, her ward executives and other members of the party for the opportunity given her to serve.

Alhassan, the governorship candidate of the APC in the 2015 election, was the only one disqualified by the party’s national working committee out of 12 aspirants from running in the primary scheduled for Sunday.

She was appointed minister in 2015 but her tenure has been blighted since she publicly disclosed her allegiance to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar in 2017.
