Makinde apologises for holding PDP rally despite coronavirus pandemic

Oyo Governor Seyi Makinde

Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has apologised for holding a mega rally for his party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), in the state in the face of the ravaging coronavirus.

The rally held on Wednesday at Ibadan, the capital, was attended by a teeming crowd including a former vice-chairman (South-West) of the PDP, Bode George; Bayelsa governor, Douye Diri; and Mr Makinde.

“I have received your complaints about the rally that was held yesterday, and I feel obligated to state in clear terms that we acted based on the information we had at that time. In retrospect, it should not have happened and I take responsibility for that lapse in judgement,” he said on Thursday.

“We do not currently have any confirmed case of coronavirus in Oyo State; (yet,) we still all need to be more proactive.”

Makinde said the state government would set up the Oyo State Covid-19 Task Force which he would lead, adding that the team would hold its first meeting on Friday.

“Immediately after the meeting, I will hold a press conference and update you on all decisions reached and so far, implemented,” he said.

There are now 12 confirmed cases of the virus in Nigeria.
