Filmmaker Kunle Afolayan has celebrated a major achievement for his Anikulapo franchise after the Netflix series won Best African Series at the 15th Ghana Movie Awards held in Accra.

Afolayan announced the win in an Instagram post on Monday, sharing photos and videos from the event.

“The award winning Akande Kwesi Afolayan 🥂 Last night in Accra Ghana, our series #anikulapothemovie won the best African series on Netflix and @fellamakafui Won best actress in same the same category. Congratulations to the Cast and Crew,” he wrote.

Ghanaian actress Fella Makafui also won the best actress award in the same category.

The 15th edition of the Ghana Movie Awards took place at the Kempinski Hotel Gold Coast City on June 8 under the theme “Rewarding African Excellence.”

The event brought together actors, filmmakers, influencers and media personalities from across Africa to celebrate achievements in the film industry and the growing global influence of African storytelling.

Guests attended a red carpet session that featured a blend of contemporary fashion and traditional Ghanaian styles. Among those who attracted attention were actress Priscilla Opoku Agyeman and fashion personality Nana Akua Addo.

The award adds to the growing list of achievements recorded by the Anikulapo franchise. The story began with the 2022 fantasy film directed by Afolayan and produced under his KAP Motion Pictures banner. Set in the old Oyo Empire, the film follows Saro, a travelling cloth weaver whose life changes after he gains access to a mystical power that can bring people back from death.

Following the success of the film on Netflix, Afolayan expanded the story into the series Anikulapo: Rise of the Spectre, which premiered in 2024. The series reunited several cast members, including Kunle Remi, Bimbo Ademoye and Sola Sobowale, while introducing new characters and storylines.

The franchise returned in January 2026 with a second season, titled Anikulapo: The Ghoul Awakens.
