Kogi assembly begins impeachment process against deputy governor

Kogi Deputy Governor, Simon Achuba

Kogi State House of Assembly has begun the process for the impeachment of the state Deputy Governor, Simon Achuba.

Majority leader Abdullahi Bello (Ajaokuta, APC) read the impeachment notice before the house on Wednesday, saying it was signed by 21 out of the 25 lawmakers.

The legislators hinged the petition on three grounds of criminal indulgence, financial misappropriation and non-performance.

They also claimed that the allegations, actions and utterances of the deputy governor amounted to gross misconduct.

Achuba had accused the governor of the state, Yahaya Bello, of being after his life.

He alleged that Bello had sent gunmen to kill him, adding that the governor had withheld the payment of his allowances amounting to N800 million.

The majority leader cited Section 188 of 1999 Constitution and prayed the house to commence investigation towards the impeachment move for the deputy governor.

The speaker, Kolawole Matthew, agreed to the prayers in the petition and asked that the petition be served on Achuba for him to respond to within 14 days.
