Nigerian-born British MP, Fiona Onasanya, has been struck off the list of solicitors in the United Kingdom.

Onasanya, a former Labour Party member, was stripped on Tuesday and accused of failing the public after being jailed for lying to avoid a speeding conviction, Daily Mail reports.

She was asked to appear before a three-man panel at the Solicitors Disciplinary Tribunal in central London.

The 35-year-old arrived for the hearing with her mother Paulina insisting she was innocent. She was struck off the roll of solicitors notwithstanding.

“As a parliamentarian makes the law so a solicitor must uphold the law and rule of law, and sadly, in this case, Ms Onasanya has failed in those duties. We must strike off Ms Onasanya from the roll of solicitors,” chairman of the panel, Edward Nally, said.

Onasanya was in January jailed for three months after a re-trial at the Old Bailey for lying to the police to avoid a speeding ticket.

She was released after serving less than a month in jail.

In May, she became the first-ever MP to be removed from office following a recall petition.
