Ile Arugbo: Kwara government demolishes Saraki’s house in Ilorin

Bukola Saraki

Kwara State Government has demolished a house of late Kwara politician, Olusola Saraki, in Ilorin popularly known as Ile Arugbo.

Residents gathered at the site early Thursday to watch government officials demolish the building which has been a subject of controversy between Kwara government and the Saraki family.

The police took over the land in the last 48 hours to forestall breakdown of law following Tuesday’s protest by elderly women against the government’s decision.

The building was a place where the late Saraki used to distribute foods, money and clothes to old women, a tradition that the former governor of the state, Bukola Saraki, inherited.

Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq says no certificate of occupancy was issued in favour of Asa Investments Limited for the property.

A new secretariat will now be constructed on the piece of land.

But Saraki says his family would contest the action through legal means, saying “We are sure this is not an action taken in public interest.”
