First lady of Kaduna State Hadiza El-Rufai has called on her husband Nasir El-Rufai to consider having a woman head the Zazzau emirate.

The position of the emir of Zazzau became vacant following the death of Shehu Idris at the 44 Army Reference Hospital, Kaduna on Sunday at age 84.

Mrs El-Rufai in a tweet on Friday called on the governor to consider a woman for the position in the spirit of gender equality.

“In the interest of gender equality, @elrufai Can we get another Queen Amina of Zazzau?” she asked.

Amina was a Hausa warrior queen of the city-state Zazzau in what is now in the north-west region. She ruled in the mid-sixteenth century. She was born in 1533 and died in 1610.

The first lady’s request comes after kingmakers reportedly sent three names – all males – as possible replacement for the late emir.
