Gernot Rohr’s job at risk as Sunday Dare threatens action

Minister of Youth and Sports Development Sunday Dare has threatened to take action following an uninspiring two-legged game between the Super Eagles and Sierra Leone.

Coach Gernot Rohr’s team drew 4-4 at home to the Sierra Leoneans in the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers and had a barren draw on its visit to the country on Tuesday.

Mr Dare apologised in a tweet on Wednesday to “all football lovers”, saying the needful would be done.

“The performance of the Super Eagles from their last two matches calls to question the suitability and competences of Technical Adviser, Rohr. Nigerian football deserves better. The needful will be done. Apologies to all football lovers,” he tweted.

Rohr has been under fire since the Eagles’ disappointing outings at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium and later at the Siaka Stevens Stadium.

The German has been criticised for his lack of flexibility and technical ability to influence games.

President of the Nigeria Football Federation Amaju Pinnick had on Instagram said about the goalless draw: “An uninspiring goalless draw this evening at the Siaka Stevens Stadium tonight. Looking forward to better performances in coming fixtures.”

Qed.ng had in May reported that Englishman Harry Redknapp was the sports ministry’s choice for coach of the Super Eagles.
