A recall petition has been opened in Peterborough, UK, to decide if embattled Nigerian-born British MP, Fiona Onasanya, will keep her seat.

The MP was jailed for three months in January after a re-trial at the Old Bailey for lying to the police when she was issued with a speeding ticket.

Onasanya could lose the marginal constituency if 10 per cent of the electorate there – around 7,000 voters – sign a petition calling for a by-election.

The petition, which opened on Tuesday, will be available for constituents to sign over the next six weeks, effectively closing on May 1.

Onasanya, in a YouTube video posted on Monday, maintained her innocence and vowed to be a “voice of change in Parliament.”

This is the first time voters will be having the chance to recall an MP after Recall of MPs Act was signed in 2016.
