Former education minister, Babalola Borishade, dies in London

Former Minister of Education, Prof Babalola Borishade, has died in London after a brief illness.

The Usi-Ekiti born politician was 71.

He was initially rushed to Reddington Hospital in Lagos, last week before he was flown abroad for further treatment.

The University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University) graduate of electrical engineering is believed to have died of lung and heart-related causes.

Borishade served under former President Olusegun Obasanjo as minister of education from February 2001 to May 2003.

He was appointed as minister of state, power and steel in 2004 and was minister of aviation between July 2005 and November 2006.

In November 2006, he was appointed minister of culture and tourism, a position he held till the expiration of the Obasanjo presidency in May 2007.
