Five persons were injured after a gas explosion at Port Harcourt Mall, housing Filmhouse Cinema, beside the Government House in Port Harcourt, Rivers State on Wednesday.

It was gathered that the explosion happened on the first floor of the two-storey edifice where Chinese and other continental dishes are sold.

The injured, who were reportedly working in the kitchen, have been admitted at the Rivers State University Teaching Hospital (RSUTH).

A taxi driver who witnessed the incident told punchng.com that the explosion incident occurred around 4:00 p.m.

“There was a gas explosion at the continental/ Chinese dishes kitchen which resulted in a fire.

“The fire burnt about five of the workers badly. In fact, one of the victims’ skin was peeling off like burnt clothes as he cried, I couldn’t watch, to be honest,” the unidentified man was quoted as saying.

Rivers State police spokesman, Nnamdi Omoni, confirmed that the injured were receiving treatment in the hospital.
