Suzette Van-Lare, the estranged partner of US-based Nigerian cardiologist Dr Ikenna Erinne, who tragically took his own life, has released a statement about the incident.
She also alleges that she and her children are facing threats in the wake of the tragedy.
For several days, it has been her father, businessman Francis Van-Lare, speaking out to dispute online reports about the situation.
However, on Tuesday, Suzette took to Instagram to address her former partner’s suicide and the ongoing turmoil.
In her statement, Suzette wrote, “There are many lies circulating online right now, and it’s impossible to address them all.
“For years, I’ve stayed silent as I’ve focused on personal growth, resilience, and my obedience to God. My children and I experienced a near-death ordeal on January 26, and we are now on a healing journey.”
Suzette further explained the challenges her family has faced, claiming that she has always been the primary caregiver for her children.
She said, “Anyone who knows us knows that I’ve been the one taking care of my kids 100% of the time. Their father hasn’t even lived in the same state as us for most of their lives.
“My son is permanently disabled and has been in therapy since he was one. I’ve always been the primary financial provider for my children.”
The mother of two added that her family has been unfairly portrayed, despite their struggles.
“My children and I will overcome. The worst night of our lives, when we begged for our lives for three hours, has been twisted to make us look like villains.”
Suzette went on to reveal the ongoing threats she has been receiving, saying, “I’ve received dozens of threats against my life and my children’s lives.
“This must stop. I have videos, pictures, and police reports to back up what I’m saying. I don’t want to escalate this, but it must end.”
She concluded her message with a call for understanding, “Nobody knows someone like their partner. I respect the memories others have of him, and I don’t seek to tarnish those.
“I know the truth, and those who know me also know the truth. What others think of me is not my concern. Nigerians are quick to gossip, but don’t forget, my children and I are real people, just trying to move forward with our lives. Let’s move forward with love.”
The tragic death of Dr Erinne, a 36-year-old cardiologist from Anambra State practicing in the United States, occurred on January 26, 2025.
Reports indicate that he took his own life after a bitter custody battle over his children, which was compounded by a court order requiring him to pay $15,000 in monthly child support to cover the expenses of his disabled son.
On Sunday, Suzette’s father, Francis Van-Lare, had accused Dr Erinne of holding Suzette and her children at gunpoint during the incident, before fatally shooting himself when the police arrived to intervene.
This tragic event has sparked widespread debate, particularly within Nigerian communities both at home and abroad.
