A civil servant identified as Abolarinwa Olaoye has allegedly committed suicide at the Ekiti State Secretariat in Ado-Ekiti.

The 49-year-old night guard with the Ekiti State Scholarship Board was said to have resumed on Tuesday evening for overnight duty.

It was not immediately clear at what point the father of five allegedly took his life.

Olaoye’s body was suspended with a clothing material tied to the railing of the staircase.

The motorcycle brought by the deceased to the office was parked within the building where the suspected suicide took place.

Civil servants who resumed for work on Wednesday morning were horrified by the incident as they trooped out from their offices to catch a glimpse of the corpse.

Operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) and policemen from the nearby new Iyin Road Police Station later came to the scene.

An in-law and confidant of the deceased Elizabeth Babalola said the native of Igogo Ekiti, Moba Local Government Area came to her around 4.30 pm on Tuesday to lament the acute financial problems he was having.

“He came to me around 4.30pm on Tuesday and started lamenting that his house rent had due and that he could not pay due to irregular salary payment.

“He said he was also indebted to the government through housing and car loans he obtained,” Mr Babalola said.
