Gunmen have killed four police officers in Agudama Ekpetiama Police Station, Yenagoa, capital of Bayelsa State.

The suspects invaded the police station around 2:15 am on Monday.

Among those killed were the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) and a pregnant policewoman.

The gunmen left with rifles, ammunition and police uniforms from the station in an operation that lasted for about an hour.

Sources said no civilian was killed as there was no detainee at the time of the invasion.

Agudama is a community under Gbarain/Ekpetiama Kingdom, few kilometres away from Yenagoa.

The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mohammed Adamu, has ordered a manhunt on the suspects.

Adamu also ordered the immediate deployment of crack detectives from the IGP-Intelligence Response Unit (IRT), the Forensic and Homicide sections of the FCID and Special Operatives of the Marine Police Department to Yenagoa to complement the efforts of the Bayelsa Police Command in carrying out discrete investigation into the attack.

The police chief paid tribute to the slain police officers and also condoled with their families.

He described the incident as a classic example of the risk the police are exposed to in their task of protecting lives and property.
