President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Friday announced national honours for 50 Nigerians, including Sambo Dasuki, Dele Alake, Joe Igbokwe and Babajide Kolade-Otitoju, in recognition of their contributions to Nigeria’s democratic struggle.
Announcing the honours during his Democracy Day broadcast, Tinubu said: “I am also pleased to announce national awards to the following Nigerians, who suffered persecution, endured indignities, exile, incarceration, and, at times, solitary confinement, so that we have democracy today.”
The president said the recipients included activists, journalists, politicians and military officers who played various roles in the struggle to restore and sustain democratic rule in Nigeria.
Tinubu also recognised a group he described as “soldier democrats” for their roles during the June 12 struggle.
“The honours list will be released in the next few days,” he added.
