National chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Nentawe Yilwatda has called on Nigerians to protect the country’s democracy and support the reforms being implemented by President Bola Tinubu.
In a statement issued on Thursday to mark Democracy Day, Chairman Yilwatda asked citizens to reflect on the significance of June 12 and renew their commitment to unity, good governance and national development.
According to him, June 12 remains a key date in Nigeria’s democratic history as it represents the struggle for justice, electoral integrity and the right of citizens to choose their leaders.
“Democracy Day is not merely another public holiday. It is a reminder of our collective struggle for freedom, representative government and the right of every Nigerian to determine the destiny of our nation through democratic means,” he said.
Yilwatda said the occasion offers Nigerians the opportunity to reflect on the country’s democratic progress and the need to protect institutions that support constitutional governance.
He noted that democracy has created room for political participation, accountability and the protection of citizens’ rights.
The APC chairman also urged political leaders, civil society groups, the media, religious bodies and youth organisations to promote dialogue, tolerance and respect for the rule of law.
Speaking on the administration of President Tinubu, Yilwatda called on Nigerians to continue backing ongoing economic and institutional reforms, saying such decisions are necessary for national development.
“The Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is designed to reposition Nigeria for economic stability, infrastructure development, improved social welfare and investment opportunities,” he said.
He added that current reforms across different sectors are aimed at strengthening public institutions, creating jobs, improving the business environment and expanding economic opportunities.
Nentawe Yilwatda urged Nigerians to remain united and reject actions capable of threatening democratic stability.
He also reaffirmed the APC’s commitment to supporting policies aimed at national development and strengthening democratic governance in the country.
