A yet-to-be-identified man was on Thursday shot dead by unknown gunmen in front of the popular Tosin Aluko motor park at Ajilosun, Ado Ekiti metropolis.

Eyewitnesses said the victim had attempted to challenge the driver of the car conveying the gunmen for reckless driving, following which the gunmen opened fire and shot him in the stomach and head.

While some sources said the gunmen after killing the man, made away with his car, others said the other occupants of the vehicle which was conveying the victim sped off on discovering that the victim had been shot dead.

The incident, according to an eyewitness, occurred around 6.15a.m. when the man said to be a commuter along Ado-Ikere Road was shot.

“The deceased was in the car and the vehicle conveying the gunmen hit his car at the back at that spot.

“The deceased then alighted from the car to complain over the reckless driving not knowing they were armed robbers and the bandits opened fire on him and he died immediately,” a source at the scene said.

The source added that the gunmen sped away from the scene.

Policemen from Ologede Police Station, who visited the scene, were said to have taken the deceased to the Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital morgue in Ado Ekiti.

Residents have deserted the area since the shooting.

Men of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) who earlier reported for work have also fled for fear of indiscriminate arrests by the police.

Ekiti police spokesperson Caleb Ikechukwu confirmed the incident, saying, “We have got a report about the killing and our men have swung into action. We are yet to know the identities of the deceased, but an investigation has begun into the killing.”
