Buhari nominates Imam who hid Christians during herdsmen attacks on Hajj team

President Muhammadu Buhari has nominated Imam Abubakar Abdullahi to serve in the National Ulama team for Hajj 2019.

The 83-year-old Muslim cleric harboured several Christians who were fleeing from suspected bandits on June 23, 2018, in several villages in Plateau State.

Social media aide of President Buhari, Bashir Ahmad, announced the cleric’s nomination in a tweet on Friday.

“President @MBuhari has nominated Imam Abubakar Abdullahi to serve in the National Ulama team for #Hajj2019. Imam Abdullahi was well celebrated worldwide after saving 226 christians from unknown gunmen in villages around Barkin Ladi, Plateau State last year,” Mr Ahmad said.

Abdullahi was in June presented the International Religious Freedom Award by the US Department of State for his noble act.

The cleric refused to give them up when their attackers asked about their whereabouts, International Religious Freedom Ambassador Sam Brownback said at the awards ceremony in Washington.
