Bayern MunichBayern Munich burst into the new Bundesliga season with a 5-0 thrashing of Hamburg at the Allianz Arena on Friday night.

The Bavarians opened the scoring in the 27th minute via a free kick. Xabi Alonso lifted the set-piece over the defence and found Medhi Benatia who powered a header past Adler and into the back of the net.

The hosts came close to adding a second goal on the stroke of half-time when Hamburg failed to clear Philipp Lahm’s cross, allowing Alaba to shoot from the edge of the area, missing the target narrowly.

Robert Lewandowski made it 2-0 to the hosts seven minutes into the second half. Alonso sent a long ball into the area where Ostrzolek could only clear it as far as the Polish striker who hammered it home.

Bayern were cruising in the 69th minute when Douglas Costa surged down the right before crossing for Thomas Muller to head home at the near post.

Muller completed his brace in the 73rd minute with a sublime individual effort, rounding Adler and squeezing in between defenders before finding the back of the net.

A mistake from Ostrzolek in the 87th minute allowed Douglas Costa to steal in and slam the fifth goal for the German giants.
