The All Progressives Congress (APC) has accused Oyo State governor Seyi Makinde of making remarks capable of inciting violence.
In a statement issued on Sunday by its national publicity secretary Felix Morka the party said Makinde referred to “Operation Wetie” while speaking at a meeting of opposition parties in Ibadan on Saturday.
The APC said the governor’s comments posed a risk to peace and security and called on security agencies to take action.
“Governor Makinde’s incitement is reckless and a clear threat to peace and national security,” the statement read.
The party said it was concerned that a sitting governor would refer to a period of political violence in the country.
“It is disturbing for a sitting governor who bears responsibility as chief security officer of his state to refer to one of the episodes of political violence to threaten violence,” it said.
The APC added that Makinde’s remarks should not be treated as routine political speech.
“His statement risks fueling lawlessness capable of undermining national stability,” it said.
The party said immunity from prosecution does not remove accountability.
“Constitutional immunity is not immunity from accountability for threats or acts against national security,” it stated.
The APC rejected claims that Nigeria is becoming a one-party state and said opposition parties are responsible for their internal issues.
It said parties such as the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Labour Party(LP) and African Democratic Congress (ADC) have internal challenges.
“The opposition parties are victims of their internal problems and leadership issues,” it said.
The party added that it would continue preparations for the 2027 general elections.
It said Nigeria’s political space allows multiple parties to participate and that it remains committed to democratic governance under President Bola Tinubu.
