African music festivals don’t give female artistes chances – Emma Nyra

Afro-pop musician, Emma Nyra, has lamented the limited chances given to female artistes at African music festivals.

In a series of tweets on Friday, the 31-year-old asked how many times Afrobeats music festivals had featured even 5 female musicians.

“This is what frustrates me. Let me ask you a question. Can u name 5 female artists? How about 10? How about 20? Hopefully u answered yes. Let me ask another question. Have u ever seen a major afrobeats concert/festival or tour that features 5 or more female artists?” she asked.

Even if there are opening acts or major acts, why is it that promoters don’t book female artists. You could claim consistency but no. There are plenty of consistent relevant female artists with no platforms to showcase their work. It’s actually very frustrating and sad.

There are many promoters who go out of their way to promote female artists and I’m truly thankful for them because with out promotion I would never have been given a chance. Male and female promoters give us a chance. We perform very well and we definitely sell tickets too.

Earlier in August, Emma Nyra celebrated the first birthday of her twin children, Alexandría and Alexander.

Emma Nyra was born Emma Obi in Houston, Texas, America.

She released her debut singles titled ‘Do It’ and ‘Everything I Do’ in 2011 while in the U.S.

Upon her return to Nigeria in 2012, she started working with D’Tunes and Iyanya who she had met in 2010 while in the U.S.

Emma Nyra signed a recording contract with Made Men Music Group in 2012, ending the contract in 2014.

She was once in a relationship with Made Men Music Group boss, Ubi Franklin.
