Abiola’s family, Buhari, Tinubu, Ooni, others at Eagles Square for June 12 celebration

The family of the late Moshood Abiola has arrived at Eagles Square, venue of the 2019 National Democracy Day celebration on Wednesday.

Abiola had won the 1993 presidential election but the results were annulled by former military ruler, Ibrahim Babangida.

President Muhammadu Buhari on June 6 awarded Abiola posthumously with Grand Commander of the Federal Republic (GCFR), an honour reserved only for presidents.

Mr Buhari also shifted the annual celebration of Democracy Day from May 29 to June 12 in honour of Abiola.

Already at the Eagles Square is the President, the Vice President, Yemi Osibajo; the national leader of All Progressives Congress (APC), Bola Tinubu.

Newly-elected Senate President, Ahmad Lawan, and Speaker of House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, are also at the event.

Others are the Ooni of Ife, Adeyeye Ogunwusi II, former Senate President, Ken Nnamani; Aliko Dangote, Femi Otedola and Jim Ovia.

State governors at the event include those of Osun, Kogi, Kano, Yobe, Kwara, Ekiti, Lagos, Oyo and Anambra.

Former ministers present include Lai Mohammed, Solomon Dalung, Mansur Dan-Ali, and Head of Service, Winifred Oyo-Ita.

Also present are members of the diplomatic corps and service chiefs.

Several world leaders are also attending the event including Rwandan President, Paul Kagame.
