Abia lawmaker commends Otti for naming road after Uma Ukpai

Member representing Ohafia South Constituency in the Abia State House of Assembly Kalu Nwoke has commended Governor Alex Otti for naming the reconstructed Tower-Onuimo Road after late evangelist Rev. Uma Ukpai.

Mr Nwoke spoke after receiving the Labour Party ticket to contest the constituency seat in the 2027 general election.

He said the decision to rename the road as Uma Ukpai Way was a fitting recognition of the cleric’s contributions to Christianity and society.

“In my opinion, the honour is not only for the late reverend, his immediate family or Ohafia people, but also the constituency and the Christian world which he served,” Nwoke said.

He thanked the governor for the gesture and for projects carried out in the constituency.

According to him, residents have benefited from road projects, bridges, health facilities and schools under the current administration.

He cited the completed Abiriba-Ohafia section of the Umuahia-Akara Junction-Abiriba-Ohafia Road, the ongoing reconstruction of the Ohafia-Arochukwu Road and the construction of the Nmuri and Igwu River bridges.

Governor Otti recently renamed the rehabilitated Tower-Onuimo Road as Uma Ukpai Way during the commissioning of projects to mark his third year in office.

Speaking at the event, the governor said the road was named after the late evangelist in recognition of his impact on society.

“We also want to celebrate our fathers in this state, who are no more,” Otti said.

The six-kilometre road, which links parts of Umuahia South, was reconstructed and expanded into a dual carriageway by the state government.

Speaking on his return as the Labour Party candidate, Nwoke thanked the governor, the party and residents of the constituency for their support.

He urged eligible voters to register and obtain their Permanent Voter Cards ahead of the 2027 elections.

“The only way they can do this is by having their voter’s cards. I’m therefore urging them to use this last window of registration to register and obtain their Permanent Voter Cards,” he said.
