Abdul Okwechime will be remembered fondly by us, Yeni Kuti pays tribute

Dancer and media personality Yeni Kuti has mourned journalist Abdul Okwechime who died on Friday.

Yeni shared a picture collage of the deceased on her Instagram account on Saturday, with a short tribute, saying that he will be remembered fondly by her family.

Yeni, who is the daughter of the late Afrobeat legend Fela Kuti, expressed sadness over the demise of her friend while recollecting how he made everyone laugh during Felabration.

She wrote: Our dear brother, friend, colleague passed away yesterday. He will be remembered fondly by us all. We are so sad that you have passed to the other realm but are left with fond memories of you.

“How you made us laugh, especially during Felabration when everyone was tense. Repository of knowledge on Fela. He knew all the answers. He will be sorely missed by us all. Rest in peace Abdul Ndubuisi Okwechime. Aka: Onkle, Landlord and a name I dare not put here. We are in tears. Rest in peace Omo Okwechime.”

Born Ndubuisi Okwechime, the deceased changed his name to Abdul after his conversion to Islam.

One of his biggest stories was an interview with notorious armed robber Lawrence Anini published in the now-defunct THIS WEEK magazine.

He also interviewed Anini’s mother after her son was arrested.

Okwechime was an acolyte of Fela Kuti and maintained a close relationship with the musician’s family until his death.

He was until his death the head of editorial of The Explainer, a weekly publication by the National Orientation Agency (NOA).
