Afrobeat artiste Made Kuti has spoken about why he did not kneel when he proposed to his wife, Inedoye Onyeso.
Made said he proposed in 2022 and the couple got married in 2023.
He explained that the proposal was based on mutual understanding rather than tradition.
“And I did not go down on one knee. Because I told her that this is a mutual decision. We are not begging each other to be with each other,” he said.
“She had a sense, but she was not sure (it was coming).”
In an interview on the Timeless podcast, the 30-year-old said Inedoye had strong values that convinced him she was the right partner. He added that she suspected a proposal might happen but was not certain.
Made also shared details of how the proposal was planned. He said he saved money from performances, booked a trip for both of them to Paris, and arranged a dinner.
“I made some money from some shows. I did some stuff, booked a flight for both of us to Paris. Then, we spent a week there. Then I booked a table for a three course meal,” he continued.
He said the proposal almost did not happen on the planned day because of the food served at the restaurant.
“It almost did not happen that day because the starters that they brought were disgusting. Both of us were complaining. So I said I could not propose under those conditions. So, when the main came, it was very nice.
“I just said there was so much chaos in the world and not so many people in the world can find someone they find peace with, at the same time, be living. As I was talking, a tear fell from my eyes, and I asked whether she would be my wife. “I decided that we would shop for the ring after the proposal.””
Made Kuti is the son of Femi Kuti and the grandson of Afrobeat pioneer Fela Anikulapo-Kuti. He is known for continuing the family’s musical legacy and has released projects including Forward and the joint album Legacy Plus with his father.
