5 things to know about NPFL top scorer, Stephen Odey

Mountain of Fire Ministries FC (MFM FC) forward, Stephen Odey, has simply been exceptional this season in the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL).

The 18-year-old youngster, affectionately christened Robert Lewandowski due to his similar playing style with the Bayern Munich star, leads the goalscorers chart with five goals from just seven games.

Odey, will once again hope to continue his remarkable streak when the Olukoya Boys host defending champions, Enugu Rangers, on Sunday.

Ahead of that epic encounter at the Agege Stadium, we take a look at five things you probably didn’t know about the forward as provided by veteran sports journalist, Godwin Enakhena, who doubles as the club’s director.

  1. Crazy about Wizkid and Chris Brown

Odey’s first love is obviously football, but when he’s not doing that, the 18-year-old listens and dances to songs of Nigerian multi-award winning pop singer, Wizkid, as well as popular American act, Chris Brown.

2. Favourite meal is beans and plantain

Odey’s superb run of form could partly be attributed to his choice of food. He loves beans and plantain and takes loads of it before games.

3. Best friend is his strike partner

Sikiru Olatunbosun, Odey’s teammate and strike partner at MFM, is his best friend according to Enakhena.

4. Toughest opponent is Kano Pillars’ Chinedu Udoji

Odey made his breakthrough last season scoring nine goals in the league. But the youngster still has fond memory of facing ex-Enyimba skipper, Chinedu Udoji, who now plays for Kano Pillars.

5. Father’s demise hampered education

The death of Odey’s dad meant the promising young lad was unable to continue with his post-secondary education and instead resorted to the game he so much loved.
