Over 100 people have been confirmed dead in two Indian states, Haridwar in Uttarkhand and two districts in Uttar Pradesh, after drinking pirated alcohol.

Local media reported on Monday that many of those who lost their lives complained of stomach pains and respiratory problems.

The illegally-produced alcohol is known locally as “hooch’’ or “country liquor’’.

Haridwar senior superintendent of police, Janmaijai Prabhakar, told Reuters that four people have been arrested in connection with the deaths.

“Total casualties in Haridwar remain at 36 and right now around 18 people are undergoing treatment,” he said.

Not less than 69 people have been confirmed dead in Uttar Pradesh as at Sunday according to local reports.

The wife of one victim, Hira Lal, told Reuters’ partner ANI that her husband “complained of severe stomach ache, so I took him to get an injection. He was better then and slept after coming back home.

“(But) the pain resumed, so we took him to the hospital again and they admitted him.”
