Actor Chiwetalu Agu is mourning his colleague Tom Njemanze, who died after battling prostate cancer.
The 69-year-old took to Instagram on Wednesday to share a video of himself paying tribute to the late movie star.
“Rest in peace Tom Njemanze. I am deeply heartbroken by the passing of my friend and colleague in the industry. Tom Njemanze you were more than just a colleague, you were a source of inspiration to so many,” he said.
“Nollywood has lost a rare gem, but your legacy will continue to live on in the stories you told, through the roles you brought to life and the memories we shared. May your soul find eternal rest and may God grant your families and loved ones the fortitude to bear their loss. Sleep well Tom, God loves you more.”
He captioned the video:
“Tribute To My Friend friend Tom Njemanze 🙏
Rest In Peace Tom Njemanze.”
Tom Njemanze, known for his roles in films like Pounds and Dollars, Issakaba, Atosa and Osuofia in London, died on Friday, July 18 in Owerri, Imo State.
His death was confirmed by filmmaker Stanley Ontop, who had earlier appealed for financial support for the actor’s treatment.
Until his death, Njemanze had been battling prostate cancer, a condition that led to calls from industry colleagues for help with his medical bills.
Reacting to the news of his death, singer and activist Charly Boy described it as “regrettable,” calling attention to the need for early detection and regular checkups, especially among men over 50.
“Tom was a great talent, and it’s heartbreaking that help came too late,” he said.
The late actor was a respected figure in the Nigerian film industry during the late 1990s and early 2000s.
Funeral arrangements are yet to be announced by his family.
