Actress Nkechi Nweje buried in Anambra

Actress Nkechi Nweje was laid to rest today in her hometown of Onitsha, Anambra State, as family, friends and colleagues gathered to bid her a final farewell.

The funeral drew a significant turnout from the Nollywood community, with several actors and filmmakers in attendance to pay their last respects.

Former Anambra State Governor and Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, was also present at the funeral.

Among actors seen at the event went, Ngozi Ezeonu, Ebele Okaro, Stanley Ontop and Chief Imo

Nkechi Nweje died on March 21, at the age of 60, following complications from abdominal surgery she underwent in November 2024. Initially believed to be recovering, her condition deteriorated in the days leading to her death.

Born on June 5, 1964, in Onitsha, Anambra State, Nweje was renowned for her compelling portrayals of maternal figures in films such as Royal War, Festival of Sorrow and Coming Back from Congo.

She began her acting career alongside Kenneth Okonkwo in the film The Biggest Boy in Town. Okonkwo remembered her as a loving, decent and hardworking individual whose passion for acting was unparalleled.

Nkechi Nweje is survived by her husband, Azubuike Nweje, a director with the Anambra State Ministry of Health and their six children.
