Ekiti housewife seeks divorce over husband’s refusal to abandon Islam for Christianity

A 35-year-old woman, Esther Hammed, on Tuesday prayed an Ado-Ekiti Customary Court to end her marriage to Abubakar over his refusal to leave Islam for Christianity.

She also said she was seeking divorce on grounds of alleged unfaithfulness and threat to life.

Hammed, a resident of 52 Fajuyi Street in Ado-Ekiti, told the court that her husband reneged on his promise to abandon Islam for Christianity.

“As soon as I became pregnant, my husband started withdrawing from going to church with me.

“He also abandoned me in the hospital after I delivered through caesarean operation. He resurfaced three years later and threatened to take away our four-year-old child,” she alleged while pleading for custody of the child.

Her 36-year-old husband, who resides at 25 Ereguru Street in Ado-Ekiti, admitted to the allegations, but pleaded with the court to save their marriage as he still loved his wife.

He also prayed for custody of the child in the event that the court fails to reconcile the matter.

President of the Court, Olayinka Akomolede, adjourned the case until June 18 for judgment.
