Why I stopped listening to Burna Boy’s songs — Mr Eazi

Singer Mr Eazi

Singer Mr Eazi has explained why he avoids listening to songs by fellow artiste Burna Boy, saying he does not want his music style to be influenced by the Grammy winner.

Speaking in a podcast interview, Mr Eazi said his decision has nothing to do with dislike or disrespect.

“I don’t like listening to Burna Boy’s songs — I’ve said it before, I don’t want my music to start sounding like his. I Don’t Want My Sound to Drift,” he said.

The singer explained that he and Burna Boy share a similar low vocal register, adding that Burna’s sound is strong enough to influence him creatively without him realising it.

Mr Eazi said he stays away from Burna Boy’s music because he is a fan of the singer and does not want to unconsciously copy his style.

“I don’t want my music to start sounding like his,” he explained.

Mr Eazi rose to fame with his Banku music sound, a blend of Ghanaian highlife and Nigerian chord progressions, earning attention with songs such as ‘Skin Tight’ and ‘Leg Over.’

Burna Boy, on the other hand, has built an international reputation with albums including African Giant, Twice As Tall and Love, Damini. He became the first Nigerian artiste to win a Grammy in the Global Music Album category in 2021 for Twice As Tall.

The two singers have collaborated in the past on the song ‘Miss You Bad’ from Mr Eazi’s 2018 project Life Is Eazi, Vol. 2 – Lagos To London.
