Unemployed man charged with raping neighbour’s daughter

Court

The police on Wednesday arraigned a 37-year-old unemployed man, Ogunmakinwa Taye, who allegedly raped his neighbour’s daughter.

The resident of Ikotun, Lagos, is being tried for rape and indecent assault before an Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court.

The prosecutor, Sgt. Raphael Donny, told the court that the accused committed the offences in October in his residence.

Donny submitted that the accused lured the 13-year-old girl into his room on the pretext of sending her on an errand.

“The accused shut the door, tore her clothes and raped her.

“The girl later told her mother of the incident, and the case was reported to the police,” he said.

The prosecutor said that the offences contravened Sections 135 and 259 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

The accused, however, pleaded not guilty.

The Chief Magistrate, Mrs. Folakemi Davies-Abegunde, granted him bail in the sum of N500,000 with two sureties in like sum.

Abegunde adjourned the case until January 15, 2018, for mention.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that rape attracts up to life imprisonment.
