UCL: Real Madrid, Wolfsburg hit Champions League quarterfinals

Spanish giants, Real Madrid and German side, Wolfsburg, became the first two teams to qualify for the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals on Tuesday.

Cristiano Ronaldo and James Rodriguez scored two second-half goals as Real beat Roma 2-0 – just as Andre Schuerrle scored the lone goal to help Wolfsburg overcome Moses Simon’s Gent 1-0.

Simon, 20, a regular for the Super Eagles and his Belgian side, started the game in Germany but failed to save his side from an exit from the tournament.

The winger made his fifth Champions League appearance of the season at the Volkswagen Arena and despite his fine display in the game – it will obviously be his last this term.

Ten-time champions, Real, advance to the quarter finals of the competition for the sixth consecutive season as Ronaldo scored his 13th goal in the competition this season by turning home a cross by substitute, Lucas Vazquez in the 64th and Rodriguez added to the lead four minutes later with a low shot from inside the area to give Madrid a 4-0 aggregate victory.

Schuerrle, making a rare start, fired the ball in from a Julian Draxler cut-back in the 76th minute to give Wolves their second straight win over the Belgians. The Germans thus secured a 4-2 aggregate victory to reach the last-eight for the first time.
