United Bank for Africa (UBA) says three individuals have been arrested over social media posts alleging that the bank’s group chairman Tony Elumelu divorced his wife Awele.
In a statement issued on Sunday by the group head of brand, marketing and corporate communication Alero Ladipo, the bank described the claim as false and defamatory.
UBA said the report was fabricated to mislead the public and damage Mr Elumelu’s reputation.
According to the statement, the matter has been reported to law enforcement authorities, who have started investigations.
The bank named the arrested suspects as Kingsley Akunemeihe, also known as @Directorkem, Chigozie Ihebom and John Nwanorue, also known as @problemchimky.
UBA added that investigations are ongoing and may lead to more arrests and prosecutions of others linked to the creation or spread of the claim.
The bank also issued a cease-and-desist notice to individuals, platforms and organisations involved in publishing or reposting the allegation.
It directed them to remove the content from all platforms, stop further circulation of similar claims and preserve records, including digital communications and metadata, pending possible legal action.
UBA warned that failure to comply would lead to legal proceedings, including claims for defamation, damages and other remedies allowed by law.
“The UBA Group is resolute in protecting the reputation, privacy, and integrity of our brand and that of Mr Elumelu, and will pursue all necessary legal avenues – civil and criminal – to ensure that all responsible parties are identified and held accountable,” the statement said.
The development comes amid growing concerns over false information involving public figures and business leaders on social media.
