Globacom accountant kills self in Lekki

Lagos accountant Folake Abiola who committed suicide

An accountant, who works for a telecoms company in Nigeria, Folake Abiola has died by suicide in Lekki area of Lagos.

The 45-year-old allegedly consumed a poisonous insecticide at her home last Friday.

A colleague of hers told PUNCH that Abiola was the only Christian in her family. The colleague blamed depression for the death of Abiola.

“She had been suffering from depression for years and her death has nothing to do with loneliness or lack of a husband or sex. Within the last seven years, I know she was in a relationship twice,” the source said.

“She ended those relationships on her own because of depression. She said she did not want to bring someone else into her life when she could not take care of herself. She was going through extreme depression, but people that did not know what she was going through have been posting rubbish online.”

There were claims on social media that the accountant took her life due to loneliness and lack of a husband.

Lagos police spokesperson Benjamin Hundeyin said the police met Abiola’s lifeless body in her residence.

“A bottle of insecticide was also found by her, apparently, she had ingested that insecticide,” he added.

Abiola’s colleague said the accountant was buried according to Islamic rites on the same day she died.
