Sunday Igboho files for asylum in Germany, to do same in Benin Republic — Report

Sunday Igboho Adeyemo

Yoruba Nation agitator Sunday Adeyemo aka Sunday Igboho, who is currently in detention in the Republic of Benin, has reportedly filed for asylum in Germany and is considering doing same in the country where he is being detained.

Sunday Igboho and his wife Ropo were arrested on Monday night at the Cadjèhoun Airport in Cotonou, Republic of Benin by Interpol after being declared wanted by Nigerian authorities.

The Cour De’appal De Cotonou ruled on Thursday that Ropo should be released unconditionally as there were no charges against her, while Sunday Igboho is to remain in police custody.

Reports say the activist was allegedly caught with a fake Beninese passport at the point of his departure to Germany through an Air France flight, an allegation the wife denied.

Punch reports on Saturday that Sunday Igboho had submitted application as a political refugee in Germany, while processes had also been completed to file another application for asylum for him in Benin Republic.

“Igboho has already applied for asylum in Germany and he hopes to file a similar application in Benin Republic in the coming days,” its source said.

It was gathered that the Cour De’appal De Cotonou adjourned the hearing of the case against Sunday Igboho till Monday following an appeal by representatives of the Nigerian government to allow more time for the necessary extradition papers to be filed.
