Suicide bombers kill 22 at crowded Borno fish market

Rescued workers collect bodies following an attack by Boko Haram suicide bombers at the outskirts of Maiduguri, Nigeria, Friday

No fewer than 22 persons were killed and 28 others injured in multiple suicide bomb attacks at a crowded fish market in Konduga Local Government Area of Borno.

The incident occurred on Friday at about 9:00pm when three suicide bombers detonated explosives at the “Kasuwar Kifi” in the outskirts of Konduga town.

Borno police spokesman, Joseph Kwaji, confirmed the attack to The Associated Press.

A witness, Idrissa Bana, said the three suicide bombers simultaneously detonated the Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) on their bodies in the crowded market.

Bana said that the explosives killed 22 persons and 28 others sustained injuries, adding that those injured were evacuated to a hospital in Maiduguri.

“There were a lot of people doing last minute shopping when the suicide bombers hit the market,” he said.

Another one, Musa Bulama, 32, said he was lucky to have survived the blasts.

“I came to the night market to buy fish for dinner when I heard a loud bang some meters behind me and I saw myself on the ground, and before I could pick up myself another one went off, then the third one,” he recalled.

“I couldn’t stand any longer and just laid down but everywhere was in total confusion.”

He added: “From the wailings, one can tell that there are many casualties.”

A competent security source confirmed the incident, adding that at the moment the identity of the suicide bombers and exact number of causalities could not be ascertained.

Boko Haram continues to carry out deadly suicide bombings in Borno state and other parts of northern Nigeria despite claims by the Federal Government that the terrorist group has been defeated.
