State pardon: Court orders Taraba to pay Nyame pension arrears

Jolly Nyame

The National Industrial Court on Tuesday ordered Taraba State Government to immediately pay ex-governor Jolly Nyame and three others their pensions in arrears.

The other judgment creditors in the suit are Uba Ahmadu, Abubakar Armayau and Bilkisu Danboyi

The court, in addition, awarded the sum of N500,000 against the state government.

Justice Osatohanmwen Obaseki-Osaghae, while delivering judgment, held that the judgment debtors did not contest owing the judgment creditors, having entered and signed an undertaking to pay their pension arrears.

The judge said that the undertaking was signed in order to stop the enforcement of the judgment, when the movable property of the judgment debtors were taken by court officials.

She further held that the judgment debtors submitted same argument and authorities as cited by the garnishee debtor, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

The judge therefore stated that there was no merit in their submissions.

In April, the National Council of State approved state pardons for Nyame and over 150 others.

The 66-year-old was governor of Taraba State from 1999 to 2007. He was serving a 12-year jail term at the Kuje prison for misappropriation of funds while he was in office. The Supreme Court upheld his conviction in February 2020.
